It’s that time of the year again!
New Year celebrations and New Year Resolutions!
While new year celebrations expected to be subdued, thanks to Omicron, new year resolutions can take centre stage this year!
Based on current understanding from the longevity and age reversal space, I urge you to add some new resolutions to your list:
- Prepare for a longer life: It is quite clear today, that baring an accident or exceptions, we will all live atleast 10-15 years longer than what our inherited genes will allow – thanks to greater understanding of epigenetics, gene control, lifestyle factors, etc. And this increase in lifespan is expected to keep increasing in the coming years, given the expected advances in longevity research.
So the first step is to revisit your lifespan expectation, in this background, and model your future lives on this basis.
- Revisit your Savings target: It is obvious that living a longer life will entail larger spending in our lifespan – for medical care, for new interests / hobbies, new pursuits, etc. We may also spend larger sums on new age life extension / age reversal protocols such as stem cell therapy, gene editing, etc. and this could be at a considerable cost!
So your Savings target may get enhanced, and this may even result in an enhanced earnings requirement!
- Focus on staying healthy:There is no fun in living longer if we are not going to remain healthy, active, disease free and independent. We need to refocus and invest in our health as a part of our daily routine. Apart from weight, BMI, fat percentage, and other normal parameters, I would recommend that you add these to your calendar:
- Annual Health tests / check ups: to track health numbers and target improvements
- Daily tracking of your numbers using wearables / trackers
- Diet, fasting, exercise and sleep protocols that you want to maintain
- Meditation / stress management protocol
- Supplement protocol
- Biohacks, if you have finalized any
- Keep track of the latest research findings in this space, follow the leading longevity and age reversal experts, and adopt new research conclusions to improve your health.
- Plan not to retire: Data shows that retirement from an active career affects health for the worst – mentally and physically. Plan your retirement understanding this. It is now recommended that one should not plan to retire. Keeping busy, even in your eighties, nineties, or beyond is considered to be a great health booster!
- Set up new learning goals: Given the expected pace of change in various work areas, it is expected that todays twenty year olds will have multiple careers in their professional lives. And so new learnings will be the norm. The advent of Coursera, edX, Udemy, Skillshare, etc. has also made learning new skills / joining courses, ultra easy, at zero or very low cost!
Having longer lifespans will also allow us to indulge in new hobbies, new interests, perhaps a new language or a musical instrument or the arts!
Create a list of such new learning goals – professional and personal, to keep you active and keep the brain young.
- Develop strong social connections: In today’s age, we live busy lives, trying to strike a balance between work, hobbies, self-care and more. Often, our social connections fall by the wayside. But connecting with others is more important than we think. Research shows that having strong social connections lowers anxiety and depression, helps us regulate our emotions, leads to higher self-esteem and empathy, improves our immune systems and helps us live longer!
So refocus on creating stronger social connects – we cannot enjoy a long lifespan without good company! And try to stay connected with younger people, it will keep you young too! Or become a pet parent and discover a new you!
- Develop your hobby: Many of us are too focused on our work and have no time for our hobbies. It’s time to roll back. Get back to your hobbies, dedicate a few hours a week and see how you rewind your anxieties and fast track your joyfulness quotient. This will keep you healthy and positive for the long journey ahead.
Or maybe its time to develop a new hobby – whatever works!
- Set up an enjoyment activity list and goals: What good is a long life if we do not enjoy the journey? Set up a list of fun things you want to do in your lifetime and have a goal list for accomplishment each year.
My list for 2022 includes a trek (to Kailash Mansarovar), a marathon, a 30 day liveout somewhere, 2 online study courses, 18 book reads, among others! What’s on your list?
And most of all friends, stay optimistic and positive, and have a little faith. No good has ever come from being otherwise. Always believe and expect that the best is yet to come!
Here’s wishing you an awesome 2022.
Cheers to the new year and your new year resolutions.
